Protecting an emu-wren
Stipiturus Conservation Park (named after the genus of the southern emu-wrens) protects 68 hectares of high-rainfall peat swamp at Mount Compass. It is one of the most important habitats for the endangered Mt Lofty Ranges Southern Emu-wren - a tiny grey-and-blue wren found in only a handful of swamp remnants in the southern Mount Lofty Ranges.
What's there
A short interpretive walk leads through the swamp edge, where you have a small chance of glimpsing the emu-wren in the long sedge tussocks. The park is also good for honeyeaters, fairy-wrens and frogs.
Best time
Early morning, calm days. The emu-wrens stay low in the sedge and you need patient, quiet observation.
